Anqing

Anqing lies in the southwest of Anhui, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River. It has jurisdiction over Tongcheng City, Huaining County, Qianshan City, Taihu County, Wangjiang County, Susong County, Yuexi County, Yingjiang District, Daguan District and Yixiu District with a total area of 13,589.99 km² and a population of 5.28 million.

Anqing is a city with a long history. 

In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 BC-256 BC), the State of Wan was established in today’s Anqing, hence the short name of Anhui Province—Wan. The city was established in 1217, and it was the capital city of Anhui Province from 1706 to 1938.

In modern times, the city took the lead in adopting advanced technologies and made great breakthrough. China’s first steam engine and motorized ship were made in Anqing Ordance Institute set up in 1861. The province’s first power station, water-supply factory, telegram office, telephone, government-funded highway, airport, modern library, university were established in the city.

It is also a tourist city with beautiful scenery. Mt. Tianzhu is the most famous scenic resort in the city. It is famous for towering pines, grotesque rocks, running waterfalls and springs, and canyons, secluded caves, defiles and ancient mountain strongholds.

The city is blessed with rich cultural heritages which has nurtured a lot of talents. 

Many well-known stories and legends originate in the city, such as “The Peacock Flies Southeast”, “The Qiao Sisters”, and “Never Step into the Forbidden Place”. It’s the hometown of Tongcheng School which dominated Chinese literature for almost three hundred years. It is the place where Huangmei Opera was formed and developed. It is the hometown of talents as Chen Duxiu (a pioneer of the new culture movement), Zhao Puchu (a leader of Buddhism), Chen Yingning (a leader of Daoism), Deng Jiaxian (the founding scholar of Chinese nuclear technology), Ci Yungui (the founding scholar of computer technology in China), Huangzhen (a famous general and a diplomat), Xi Juhua (a well-known acrobatics) and Zhang Henshui (a master of popular novels).
